In accordance with U.S.D.O.T. requirements 49 CFR Parts 172.602 and 172.604 and section USG-12 of IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, 43rd Edition, effective January 1, 2002; this document is made part of the Shipping Papers of shipments classified as Radioactive Material,

Type B (U) package, U.N. 2916.

 

 

POTENTIAL HAZARDS:

  1. Health Hazards: External radiation from unshielded radioactive material. Radioactive material; degree of hazard will vary greatly, depending on type and quantity of radioactive material and packaging. Material in special form or in type B (U) packaging are not expected to cause contamination in accidents.
  2. Fire or Explosion: None

EMERGENCY ACTION:

  1. Keep unnecessary people at least 150 ‘ upwind of spill, greater distances may be necessary for people downwind, or if advised by Radiation Authority. 
  2. Isolate hazard area and deny entry.
  3. Response actions may be performed prior to any measurement of radiation.
  4. limit entry to shortest possible time.
  5. Positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and structural firefighter’s protective clothing will provide limited protection.
  6. Notify radiation authority of accident conditions.
  7. Detain uninjured persons, Isolate equipment with suspected contamination,
  8. Delay clean-up until arrival or instruction of qualified Radiation Authority.

FIRE:

  1. Do not move damaged containers; move undamaged containers out of fire zone.
  2. Fight fire from maximum distance.

SPILL OR LEAK:

  1. Do not touch damaged containers.
  2. Damage to outer container may not affect primary inner container.
  3. Special Form capsules are not expected to leak as a result of an accident or fire.

FIRST AID:

  1. If there is no injury, remove and isolated suspected contaminated clothing and shoes, assist person to shower with soap and water and notify radiation authority of action. Advise medical personnel that victim may be contaminated with radioactive material.
